A total of 111 singleton normal pregnancies were studied during the second half of pregnancy using a combined color-coded Doppler and two-dimensional real-time ultrasound system. Pulsed Doppler measurements of the most proximal branch of the right or left pulmonary artery were attempted during fetal apnea from a transverse cross-section of the fetal chest at the level of the cardiac four-chamber view after visualization with color Doppler. The success rate in obtaining the pulmonary arterial waveform was 85%. The waveform displayed a rapid systolic velocity acceleration, followed by an initially rapid but then more gradual velocity deceleration which was interrupted in most cases by a short reversed flow interval at the beginning of the diastolic phase of the cardiac cycle. The diastolic phase was characterized by forward flow. Peak systolic, end-diastolic and time-averaged velocity, pulsatility index and systolic integral remained constant during gestation. Changes in vessel diameter or compliance may play a role in this. A gestational agedependent rise was established for peak diastolic veloCity, diastolic integral and early peak diastolic reverse flow, whereas a gestational age-determined

I-46: Obstetrical Doppler

Accurate assessment of gestational age, fetal growth, and the detection of fetal and placental abnormalities are major benefits of sonography. Color Doppler can be used to assist in the identification of vascular architecture, detection of vascular pathology and visualization of blood flow changes associated with physiologic processes and disease states. The clinical applications of obstetrical...

The use of pulsed-wave Doppler in prenatal diagnosis. An update.

Pulsed wave Doppler ultrasound of fetal vessels confirms the similarity of human fetal circulation to the experimental animal physiology, The result of a multitude of research articles in this field is the clinical use of various components of fetal circulation in perinatal medicine. Umbilical, uterine and fetal cerebral arteries as well as the fetal venous circulation show the potential of Dop...

P-247: To Evaluate The Oxytocin Effect on Maternal-Fetal Circulation during Termination of Pregnancy

Background: To evaluate the effect of oxytocin on blood circulation of fetus and uterus by Doppler ultrasound. Materials and Methods: Forty six pregnant women were assigned to receive for indication of delivery intravenous oxytocin. Doppler velocitometry before and after administration of oxytocin for umbilical, middle cerebral artery and uterine artery were performed, and Pulsatility index (PI)...

Detection and quantitation of constriction of the fetal ductus arteriosus by Doppler echocardiography.

Pulmonary hypertension may occur in the fetus in the presence of constriction of the ductus arteriosus. The feasibility of detection and quantitation of fetal ductal constriction by Doppler echocardiography was assessed in an animal preparation in which ductal constriction was created in the fetal lamb with a variable ligature causing varying degrees of fetal pulmonary hypertension (fetal pulmo...
